On January 17, 2010, a new six-part Dr. Bailey series entitled "Women in the New Testament" will be presented at 10 a.m. in the Parlor. Dr. Bailey notes that there are two apparently irreconcilable attitudes toward women's leadership in the New Testament. One position is for said leadership (Galatians 3:28), and the other against (1 Timothy 2:11-15). He also takes a look at the Old Testament which uses both male and female images to enrich our understanding of God. In the ensuing lectures he will discuss not only these topics, but such things as the reason for 12 men as the Apostles and the women as teachers, professors, elders, etc., who appear in the New Testament. A more detailed look at Mary the Mother of Jesus will be examined in Lecture 3. The question pertaining to women brought up in 1 Corinthians 11:1-16 (men and women prophets), will be the subject of Lecture 4. Lecture 5 deals with "women being silent in church," (1 Corinthians 14), and to "hold no authority over men," (1 Timothy 2). Lecture 6 looks at three additional passages: “Who teaches whom?” (Titus 2:1-6); "Human sexuality” (1 Corinthians 6:12-20); and "Mutual submission” (Ephesians 5). It's pure Dr. Bailey at his most provocative and insightful best.
